My site seems to have been hijacked! I'd been using a feed booster site to let people subscribe to this page, which had started to redirect viewers to a site with one of those annoying, beeping pop-up windows. I've since erased the troublesome "subscribe" button and have replaced it with one that works. Unfortunately, people who had once subscribed to this page might have to subscribe again to receive further updates.
So sorry about the redirect! I was tricked!!!
All of the problems should be fixed. Please let me know if they aren't. And please subscribe if you'd like to hear more book news!

The medieval French town of Lucéram
I thought I should explain the setting for the new headline picture on this page, since it's been part of a story I've been posting on the pages of the Lovely Awkward blog.
Luceram, the small medieval village above is absolutely amazing to visit. Behind the walled village, just off a main road north of Nice, is a world of secret gardens, flowers and hiking trails. This is where the Professor and I went for dinner on the day that we signed our PACS, the French equivalent of a common-law agreement. The story that goes with the photo is here.
Chapter I'm working on today: the less romantic side of our trip to Spain. (pre-PACS era)

Parts of the story revealed...
Well, I've revealed a few secrets over on the other page -- the one for the Lovely Awkward blog. (This is the Lovely Awkward book blog... one day the two blogs will fall in love and get married and this will all make sense.)
I'd been keeping a secret, but now I'm beginning to fill in some of the gaps. Not all of them, however. Most of the lovely awkward details are being saved for the book. For a taste of where the story's headed, however check out www.kerrymacgregor.com. Gap updates on Mondays. Regular updates whenever else they occur to me.
The story of secrets begins here, on Christmas Eve.

In other news ... I'm still working on the Lovely Awkward book. My brain is changing so quickly -- finally, I'm getting used to this country! -- that it's now hilarious to read over my earlier chapters. I really was stupid and naive when I got here. I'm surprised I even made it off the plane and through customs the first time. When I compare my understanding of what I thought was on the other side of the airport's glass doors back then, and what I know now ... I could be talking about two different countries.
So... yes, some time has passed.
And, apparently, the book market has gone crazy. What I'd like to know now, while I'm still writing, is HOW crazy. Since I'm working on a story that travels and I've got links to almost all of the places I've visited, I'd be interested to hear what people think of having all of this super info linked to the narrative. Do you follow one of the links on the blog and get lost in images of buttery French dishes -- or what? Do you care to see the real hotel? Do you prefer to follow a story that includes all of these added content distractions? Or is it sometimes too distracting?
I know what I like, I'm just wondering about everyone else.
When my confessions on the other page - the Lovely Awkward blog - began, I started with a conversation in a restaurant that was recommended to me by a friend, in person, through word-of-mouth. If I hadn't heard about the restaurant, U Mulinu, I would never have found it. So, I think it's nice that I can pass the info along to others who want ham thrown at them. Isn't it?
I know that many ebooks are just back-lit texts and not masses of hyperlinks -- but I suppose this is where they could all be going. So, my question when it comes to books rather than blogs, remains: Would you rather read an e-book that was this thick with (optional/available) background info? Or would you prefer to just sit alone on a park bench with an off-the-grid paperback book?

Plunging into Mediterranean life

Lovely Awkward is a memoir that tells the story of a leap for love, but also of a leap into life in France. (Frankly, I'm not sure which adjustment has been more difficult.)
The story started as a column in the Toronto Star, called French Kiss.
In the summer of 2009, I went on a hike in Gatineau, Quebec and met a professor from France. We dated for nine days and then he asked if I'd like to fly over to see his lovely Frawnce, since he had to return. In a wild and crazy leap, I quit my job, subletted my apartment and dropped my life as a journalist in Canada for a chance at romance in a foreign country. (Really, how could I not!?)
Now, I'm working on the book and writing about my lovely awkward experiences along the French Riviera on a blog at www.kerrymacgregor.com. The Prof. and I have a language barrier, and we've made many unexpected (and, wow, awkward) cultural discoveries, so the blog is basically a collection of amusing France vs. a Canadian anecdotes.
Lovely Awkward is currently making its way around to publishers. And eventually, this site will be the home of that project.
More news coming very, very soon!
Until then ... www.kerrymacgregor.com.
